Blood Pressure Measurement
To ensure blood circulation in the body, blood pressure must be present, because without it blood cannot circulate and supply the body with life-needed oxygen and nutrients. Blood pressure is the pressure of a glow of blood against the artery walls. Blood pressure is affected by many factors, for example, the narrowing and widening of blood vessels, obesity, heredity, various hormones, physical activity, stress, alcohol, smoking.
The normal blood pressure of an adult at rest should not be higher than 140/90 mm Hg. In some cases, like for people suffering from diabetics, blood pressure should be treated as soon as it exceeds 120/80, because for such groups of people increase in blood pressure has much higher risk to affect their health.
If a person has high blood pressure, he/she needs a close investigation in order to find out the reason that has caused it. It is very important to determine the reason for high blood pressure at the time it is first observed, because there are number of diseases for which early diagnosis and treatment affects the disease prognosis.
Symptoms Indicating That You Have High Blood Pressure:
One of the symptoms is headache. Pain is localized mostly in the occipital region. Pain can be smooth or pulsed. A feeling of heaviness can be in the head or back of the head. If blood pressure rapidly changes (hypertensive crisis), dizziness, nausea, vomiting can also be felt. There can also be vision problems, and a patient can be disoriented and drowsy. The heart pain, abnormal heart rhythms and breathing difficulties can appear.
What You Can Do To Control Your Blood Pressure:
- To work with a family physician in order to determine the cause of high blood pressure.
- Do not forget to take prescribed medicaments even if blood pressure is normal.
- It is possible that blood pressure is normal just because of the treatment.
- To buy instruments for measuring blood pressure and learn how to use them correctly.
- Make an effort to normalize body weight.
- To limit salt consumption.
- Physical and sport activities should be discussed with your family physician.
- Do not smoke.
- Do not work night shifts.
- To assess if your meals are healthy and contain enough vegetables.
A blood pressure measurement result consists of two figures. These figures show the pressure on the walls of blood vessels. Both figures are usually recorded as a fraction, such as 140/90 or 160/110.
- The figure on top represents pressure against the walls of blood vessels at a time when you heart drives blood to organs. Doctors usually name it as systolic pressure.
- The figure at the bottom represents pressure against the walls of blood vessels at a time when your heart is having rest. It is known as diastolic pressure.
The figure on top of the blood pressure measurement result often reflects the risk of a heart attack, stroke or development of other risks. A doctor can help you understand your blood pressure task. Remember that very low blood pressure can also be dangerous.
Checking Sugar Levels in Blood (Glucose Monitoring)
Determination of glucose level in blood is not only an important diagnostic criterion, but also a SD compensation indicator. However, bear in mind that determination of sugar level once a month after fasting is extremely inaccurate SD compensation indicator. It is a momentary indicator. Glucose level in SD patients’ blood is very volatile. The determination of glucose level should be done several times a day in order to at least partly assess SD compensation.
Glucometers
Glucometers play a very important role in controlling SD. Doctors and nurses use them in acute and chronic illness situations as well as for diabetes control in doctor’s practices. We remind you that express diagnostics is approved by the Order No.9 (30th of October 2000) on ‘Family medicine’s express diagnostics and health self-monitoring technologies’ of the Ministry of Welfare Medicine Department. Diabetic patients use glucometers at home, school, workplace and other everyday situations. Currently available glucometers based on their technologies are divided into two large groups: biosensor technologies and photometric glucometers.
